How to reach L’Aquila
By plane ✈️
The nearest airports are Rome Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci Airport – FCO), Rome Ciampino (CIA) and Pescara Abruzzo Airport (PSR).
If you are travelling from Rome Fiumicino (FCO), there are 2 main options for reaching L’Aquila:
FCO option 1. Take a bus operated by Gaspari Bus from Fiumicino airport. Tickets and timetables are available on the Gaspari Bus English website. A live timetable of the bus journeys departing from the airport can be consulted in the arrivals section of the terminal. Your bus will be the one that indicates “San Benedetto del Tronto” as its final destination (L’Aquila is an intermediate stop). Your journey will take between 1h55 and 2h20. The bus will leave you right in front of the Hotel Amiternum (see it on Google Maps by clicking here), about 2 km away from L’Aquila’s city center. Reach the city center by taking a taxi (cost: around 10 €): you will find them parked just outside the Hotel Amiternum. You can also book a taxi by calling +39 08 62 02 22.
FCO option 2. Take a train from Fiumicino airport to Roma Tiburtina railway station(cost: 8,00 €; final destination: Fara Sabina/Orte). The train reaches Tiburtina Station in about 40 minutes. After reaching Roma Tiburtina Station, head towards the TIBUS Bus Station, located in front of the Tiburtina station (see it on Google Maps by clicking here). Take the TUA BUS (operated by ARPA company) to L’Aquila, which usually leaves from stall 1 or 2. The ticket costs 11.50 euros, and can be purchased at the “Biglietteria C” of TIBUS station (“Biglietteria” is the Italian for “Ticket office”). The route you should be looking for in the live timetable at the bus station is ROMA TIBURTINA – L’AQUILA TERMINAL BUS COLLEMAGGIO. The bus schedule can be downloaded here (unfortunately, this site has no English version). Get off in L’Aquila at the stop QUESTURA, in the city center.
If you are travelling from Rome Ciampino (CIA), there are 2 main options for reaching L’Aquila:
CIA Option 1. Take a bus operated by Gaspari Bus from Ciampino airport. The company provides bus journeys to L’Aquila from both Fiumicino and Ciampino airport. Follow the directions provided above at FCO option 1.
CIA Option 2. Take a bus from Ciampino Airport to Anagnina underground station. The bus leaves every 15-20 minutes. Once at Anagnina, take underground line A to Roma Termini (a map of Rome underground lines is available here). Change there for underground line B and reach Roma Tiburtina railway station. After reaching Roma Tiburtina Station, follow the directions provided above at paragraph FCO Option 2.
If you are travelling from Pescara Abruzzo Airport (PSR), take a bus from the airport to the Pescara bus station located in Piazza della Repubblica (next to the Main Train Station). Buses run every 10 minutes (from 5.30 till 23.30) arriving at the bus station in 10 minutes. Once in the Pescara bus station, take a bus to L’Aquila. The ticket for L’Aquila can be purchased at the ticket office in the Railway Station Square or online (follow this same link for bus schedule; unfortunately, this site has no English version). The route you should be looking for is PESCARA PIAZZA DELLA REPUBBLICA – L’AQUILA TERMINAL BUS COLLEMAGGIO. The ticket costs 9,60 euro. Get off in L’Aquila at the stop QUESTURA, in the city center. The travelling time is about 1h50.
By train 🚆
The nearest railway stations are Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina.
If you are travelling from Rome Termini, take the underground line B to Roma Tiburtina railway station (a map of Rome underground lines is available here). After reaching Roma Tiburtina Station, follow the directions provided above at FCO Option 2.

By bus 🚌
The nearest city that is served by all the major international bus service companies is Rome. Once in Rome, you can reach L’Aquila by following the directions provided above in the “By train” section.
